Bohol has a rich history hidden beneath its fame of white sand beaches, Chocolate hills, and the Tarsier.
If you are a history lover and visiting soon, consider these places as part of your itinerary! I highly recommend you do a guided tour too so you will dive deeper not just in history but also other interesting stories about Bohol.
Here are must-go places in Bohol if you love history!
Baclayon Church
This is located in the town of Baclayon. Even if you’re not religious, Baclayon Church will be an interesting place to learn how Catholicism was introduced and influenced the islands’ culture during and after Spanish colonization.
The preserved and restored elaborate interior and exteriors are also impressive, especially when learning how they were previously used.
A local guide will tour you around the church museum and inside the church. Sometimes, you get to witness an event, like baptisms and weddings.
The Mystical Lamanok Island
Located in the coastal town Anda, this place is a full experience. One of the remaining (if not only) well-preserved places to experience a glimpse of Bohol’s ancient traditions way before the Spanish colonization.

You get to ride a small boat going to the island. Then a local guide will talk about the different spiritual beliefs and burial customs of ancient Boholanos.
Trekking to the burial caves was not just intriguing, but also served a beautiful view.
Amarella’s Art Gallery
Located at Amarella Resort in Panglao, this place is one of my favorite places to immerse myself in history.
The resort has a private collection of paintings depicting Bohol’s ancient history and folklore.

To have a beautiful visual of what those events looked like is such an impactful thing especially for me as a local. Even locals rarely know about these stories.
National Museum Bohol
The building of the National Museum – Bohol has a rich history itself. Built from 1855 to 1860 to serve as a tribunal, prison, and military quarters for the Spanish military. It served as a center for Provincial Government for some time, until it was damaged by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in 2013.
The place was restored to its original look and is now housed with different exhibits to learn about Bohol’s natural and cultural history.
Which one sounds most interesting to you?
These are my favorite places around Bohol that showcases it’s history.
It would be best to get an accredited tour guide though so you will have a wider view of the province’s history and culture while going around the province.
